Iraqi police kill up to 12 in mosque

Police in the southern Iraqi city of Basra were accused of killing 12 worshippers in a Sunni mosque Saturday, but police said they acted in self-defense after being fired upon. Police said they has received a tip that terrorists were held up inside the Al-Arab Mosque in Basra and were fired upon after they surrounded the building. They said six were arrested and nine were killed. Some witnesses stated up to 12 were killed. Hours earlier, a car bomb killed 28 people in Basra. Sunni Iraqis have accused Shi'ite militias of infiltrating Iraqi police and then carrying out sectarian killings.
