WASHINGTON (AFP) -US President George W. Bush is aware of growing concern over Iraq and does not view the situation there through "rose-colored glasses," White House spokesman Tony Snow said.
"The president understands people's impatience -- not impatience, but how a war can wear on a nation," Snow said in an interview with CNN's "Late Edition."
"He understands that."
Snow said Bush's surprise visit to Baghdad was an effort to help the president get a realistic assessment of the situation in Iraq, where 2,500 US servicemen have died since the March 2003 invasion which toppled Saddam Hussein.
"The president didn't go there with rose-colored glasses," Snow said. "He went there for a realistic assessment ... this was not the president trying to do a victory lap."
"This is not a president who's looking with rose-colored glasses (at the situation in Iraq)," he said.
Snow said Bush is aware of opinion polls showing the war is increasingly unpopular among Americans but "you can't run a war based on polls."
"Whatever the facts may be on the ground, the most important thing is you figure out how to win, and that has been the focus of the president's efforts," Snow said.
"(People) need to understand that the United States is not going to leave until, A, the Iraqi government wants us to leave, and B, the job is done," he said.

This has to be the worse press release I have ever read, not only the words “rose-colored glasses” was mentioned at least three times as well as standing behind a war that is illegal to begin with, went into with lies being told to the American people with only the goal that Israel wanted Saddam Hussein out of office and to steal the resources of a country why he was at it.
I am not so concerned with the polls either actually, I find them a sadistically form of laughable and Mr. Bush sure doesn’t seemed to be worried with the increasing discussion towards impeachment.
Mr. Bush plans on winning a war which deals with nothing but murder, occupation, stealing in the name of democracy, myself if I were him I would think again because the opposing resistance in Iraq seems to have other ideas towards Mr. Bush’s end result.
In my opinion, like it has been brought out with disgust by other’s that after Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s death Mr. Bush gloated that he was able to get information to murder a man in the same kind of operation that the Israeli Military uses to murder Palestinians; by hitting him from the air.
I am yet to wonder with so much attention, that Iraq looks like a combination of Vietnam and Palestine; that Mr. Bush has much to be proud of any more then the blood that the Israeli government spills on a daily basis or the fact that he can sleep at night knowing civilians are not only dying from American bullets but by hunger and disease thanks to his efforts?
Then, I think further about what Mr. Bush calls detention prisons and they are nothing more then Prison Camps that are so close to Nazi’s final solution; that it turns anyone with a little compassion to vomiting.
So many allocations about torture and people being held for years without being charged with a crime on foreign soil is not only a war crime offense but really need’s to be taken care of before the United States has so many enemies they can not comb them out of their hair. The Global community that doesn’t kiss Israel has the growing repulsion beyond anything I have ever seen even in history.
