ECSSR calls for a decisive global stand against Israel

9 July 2006

ABU DHABI — The Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) has called for a decisive international stand against Israel’s attacks against the Palestinians. “The Middle East is on the brink of war,” it states.

“The international community and supreme powers, besides the United Nations, must firmly prevent Israel from leading the whole area to a grave disaster. Israel not only reoccupies the Gaza Strip and shatters the dreams of its people — following the directives of the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert — it also kills more innocent Palestinians. The peace process is roughly destroyed from top to bottom. There seems to be no hope for any peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

The crisis, according to the ECSSR, will spread to other places across the area. Israel is trying to widen the confrontation, creating an atmosphere of unrest and suspicion on the real purpose behind its attacks. Israel’s air fighters reportedly hovered over a presidential palace in Damascus and threatened to assassinate Khaled Meshaal, head of the Hamas Political Bureau, insisting on holding Syria responsible for the abduction of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. “The muted reaction of the international community to Israel’s aggression encourages it to escalate its incursions and crimes. Olmert finds it an opportunity to prove his leadership and show his efficiency as a successor to Ariel Sharon,”the ECSSR states.

Dr Mohammed Abdullah Al Rokn, a law professor with the UAE University, said: “The ongoing situation and the inhuman siege Israel imposes on the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have unmasked many and thrown the responsibility on others.”
