Syrians protest Israel's Gaza violence
Although Syria considers itself the vanguard and heart of Arab nationalism, it took two weeks for its public to protest against operation "Summer Rains" launched by Israel in Gaza in an attempt to liberate an Israeli soldier kidnapped by Hamas and two other Palestinian armed factions.
The demonstrators gathered early Monday at a central Damascus Square, brandishing Palestinian flags as well as the banners of the ruling Arab Baath party and posters of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
They also raised banners which read "the Israeli terrorism will only boost our people's steadfastness and determination for struggle and resistance."
Other banners accused Israel of killing 1,000 Palestinian children according to a count by the International Criminal Court, and starving the Palestinian people.
The demonstrators also blasted "Arab idleness and silence" over the massacres being committed against the Palestinian people and its leaders.
The demonstration, organized by professional unions and popular organizations, called for trying Israeli Gen. Yoav Galant as a criminal of war for bombarding the Gaza coast and killing beachgoers and vacationers, including a family on picnic.
The head of the Order of Lawyers, Jihad Faham, told United Press International that the demonstration was mostly spontaneous, stressing that "we do not need an invitation to protest against the killing of children and civilians."
He said: "Our protest today is a spontaneous and simple expression of our anger regarding the developments in Palestine, especially the Arab idleness and international silence regarding the Zionists crimes."
A Dutch tourist was among the protesters, raising a Palestinian flag as her husband filmed the demonstrations.
She explained that her tourist guide was delayed by the demonstration and she decided to go on the street and express solidarity with the protesters, saying "I love the Palestinian flag that I am holding."
