AFIC calls for ceasefire in Lebanon

A peak Muslim group has called on the Australian government to sponsor an urgent United Nations motion calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East.

The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) says a UN peacekeeping force should be sent urgently to Lebanon and Palestine to ensure long-lasting peace and security.

In a statement, AFIC warns that the war between Israel and Hizbollah militants in Lebanon could lead to a humanitarian crisis - and a world petroleum crisis.

"It is essential to have an immediate ceasefire," AFIC said.

"It is essential for the Australian government to sponsor such an urgent motion to the United Nations."

It was time that followers of all three religions - Christianity, Judaism and Islam - fulfilled their obligation to pursue peace, freedom, security, prosperity and genuine charity, AFIC said.

"The second world war in the 20th century caused the death of over 50 million people. It was not necessary, it was a tragic mistake. A tragic mistake that is about to be repeated in our time," AFIC said.

"It is essential to stop the war now or the world as we know it faces destruction."
