Actor Hussein Fahmi Says ‘No Thanks’ to UN
CAIRO, 1 August 2006 — Well-known Egyptian actor Hussein Fahmi and a goodwill ambassador of the United Nations, said he is handing back the UN honorary post in protest of the international organization’s impotent stance against the savage Israeli attacks in Lebanon, the Al-Watan daily reported yesterday.
“I cannot continue as a goodwill ambassador of the UN while I find the Security Council hasn’t taken any effective steps to stop the massacre of the innocent people in Qana or the bombing of the Al-Khayam municipal hospital,” the famed movie actor said in a statement.
“I cannot, as a human being, continue in an organization, which is incapable of saving the Lebanese people even though the very basis of its existence is for the protection of the weak and to create a humane climate for mankind,” the disgusted artist added.
