Hamad: Hamas selects, agrees on next premier of PA coalition government

November 6, 2006

Gaza - Spokesman of the PA government Dr. Ghazi Hamad affirmed on Monday that the Hamas leadership has agreed on the PA premier who will head the next PA coalition government and that the Movement will inform PA chief Mahmoud Abbas of his name.

Abbas, according to Hamad, will study the matter and inform Hamas of his answer, and if an agreement is reached on the premier, Abbas will head to Gaza to finalize matters.

Hamad further explained that the next PA coalition government will be based on terms and inspirations of the national harmony document signed by all Palestinian factions.

"There is a consensus among all factions that future ministers of the next unity government should be qualified, honest, and corrupt-free", Hamad underlined.

For his part, MP Dr. Salah Al-Bardaweel, spokesperson of Hamas parliamentary bloc in the PLC, affirmed that the agreement on the national coalition government is a purely internal Palestinian matter, and has nothing to do with a possible prisoners' swap deal with the Israeli occupation government.

"Hamas will name the next premier being the biggest bloc in the Palestinian legislature", said Bardaweel, as he shrugged off media reports that current PA premier Ismail Haneyya will definitely be replaced.

It could be Haneyya, and it could be a person other than Haneyya. The matter is up to the Hamas Movement to decide, and we assure our people that the next premier will be as good as they expect", he emphasized.

Commenting on assurances that the international siege imposed on the Palestinian people for eight months would be lifted after formation of the coalition government, Bardaweel indicated that Hamas has received from Abbas assurances in this regard, adding that Arab and international parties will attend ceremonies of the agreement. "We hope that there will be assurances indeed in this regard", he added.
