Save Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi
On January 3, 2006, 18-year-old Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi was sentenced to death for murder by court in Iran after she stabbed one of three men who attempted to rape her and her 16-year-old niece in a park in Karaj (a suburb of Tehran) in March 2005. She was seventeen at the time. Iran is signatory to international treaties which forbid them to execute any one under the age of 18; however they continue to do so.
The injustice of this case propelled Nazanin Afshin-Jam to take immediate action and start a petition to help save the life of her namesake. The petition now has over 200 000 signatures from around the world.
Since initiating the Save Nazanin Campaign with Mina Ahadi- the Head of the International Committee Against Execution and Stoning- and through the help of other human rights groups and individuals, they have been able to engage the UN, Canadian Parliament, the EU, Amnesty International and others to pressure the Iranian Officials to spare the life of this child.
On June 1st 2006, the Head of Judiciary Ayatollah Shahroudi announced a stay of execution and the call for a complete new retrial. Nazanin Fatehi’s retrial will take place January 10th, 2007 (20th of Dey 1385 in the Iranian calendar).
Mini video collage of Nazanin's case
David Etebari, creator of www.mypace.com/savenazanin has creatively put together a compilation collage of Nazanin's case using the Persian Prince's rap song about Nazanin Fatehi. Please pass it along and share it with others.
Update:
After 350,000 signatures and more then two years in jail Nazanin was eventually released on bail on January 31, 2007.

H4P - I signed the petition. Thanks for bringing this my attention.
So often we hear that Muslims do not speak up for justice, especially against or for their own people. You have clearly put this misrepresentation to rest.
I hope the world's pleas will help her. Also, she is amazingly beautiful, if I am allowed to say.
LanceThruster,
For one this situation just happens to be contrary to Islamic belief’s, the girl did not commit murder she was attacked which the young men shouldn’t have been doing and Nazanin had the right to protect herself; it was strictly self defense.
It was unfortunate the young man died but he was committing a crime that normally would have found them at the executioner’s post.
I do not know why you would think we do not speak up for injustice, when we seem to have to do way to much especially these days.
While she is only an 18-year-old girl, I am more inclined to think you are thinking of the singer with the same name. There are many Arab women that are beautiful, just like all cultures; what makes us different is the inner beauty should shine more then the superficial.
Thank you so much for signing the petition because this kind of thing needs to stop and your very welcome.
H4P - The reference to the impression that Muslims do not speak out is what is promoted by the Western press. Often when debating/discussing in forums someone will accuse those standing up for Muslim interests of ignoring the "fact" that Muslims themselves do not stand up for justice. You hear the same standard misrepresentation on radio and TV. Unfortunately, there are many things that our press says about Muslims/Arabs that are either not true or do not represent the majority of Arabs/Muslims. I do not believe it to be true that they do not stand up for justice because it isn't true. However, many people are uninformed because our media sees to it that they are uninformed.
As to the comment on the woman's attractiveness, it was in regards to the picture embedded within the article. Whether it is her or not, you are correct in that a persons true value and beauty transcends their physical appearance.
Thank you again for this article.
LanceThruster,
Most of the Western press is this really bad joke. Most of the things they come up I wonder where it comes from some reject comic book person who could not get a job in his field. Lol
How many times I think they could not be talking about me because these people they are talking about does not even sound like anyone or me I know.
I am happy to know you seem to see us as real people and not some passive drone waiting for the next Ahlan to call us for prayers and nothing else.
As for the sister I understand. :)
Your very welcome, inshaallah they stop this practice because it is wrong.
I agree with Lance, what a stunning beauty. And what a shocking story! Poor girl, what a destiny these people want to give her, I am sure the jury were all MEN who thinks raping a woman is OK. It is insane that the state want to murder her because she accidentally killed her perpetrator, wanting to defend herself and her niece.
And don't let me even start talking about the gruesome stoning of women they allow. Must be the ultimate cruel and horrifying way to leave this world. I feel like throwing up just thinking of it, seems so absurd that I have difficulties understanding it is actually happening.
I'll sign the petition as well and send it to my friends, please dear God, have mercy on Nazanin, keep her safe and give her the chance to live her life!
Thanks for bringing this to my attention H4P. Hope you and the baby are doing well!
Merete,
In Islamic countries, there is no jury to begin with. The judicial system is different.
Rape is an offence that usually ends with the men seeing the executioner not the women. What makes this case so unusual is Nazanin I think is being accused of murdering one of her attacker’s not self-defense, which is not a crime. Myself, she should have used any means to stop these young men.
This is a case against Islamic law, which should not ever happen because she is guilty of nothing; the young men are the criminals.
This particular case is going among many in the Muslim world as a crime as well, with the attempt of saving Nazanin’s life and other’s that may be like her. I thank you for helping me and other’s like me that see this as a crime and wish to save all the people like this young girl.
You brought up about stoning which some people may have this look like a prevalent situation in the Islamic world when this is just the opposite case. Stoning is only in the case of Adultery, which has been this way since ancient times. It also used to be practiced among Christians and Jews in history. You will find less cases of infidelity in the Muslim world than what is happening in the West from what I have heard.
I will be perfectly honest, a woman or man the does not stay true to their marriage are nothing to me, for they not only hurt their families but is and offence to Allah and is a crime.
I met a woman once who was committing Adultery in my travels in the West several years ago, to me when her husband had to work long hours to care for her and their two children while she was seeing a man behind his back she and the man she was seeing became nothing to me.
Myself, I find Stoning a very harsh form of execution for a woman who commits Adultery, but what most people in the West I do not think understand that in the Islamic world both parties in any crime of Chastity are found equally guilty, not just the woman.
You have to know that equality in the Muslim world is older then the equal rights situation that occurred in Western countries.
As for me and the baby dear, kind of hard to get around these days for I am getting bigger and tire easy. I never realized a baby could be so active, I do not know how to explain other then having a stomach ache with out have a regular stomach ache, which I mentioned to my husband I am sure the baby is moving.
It is nice when you have stop some where and say emergency bathroom when you are pregnant and everyone understands so they find one fast .lol
My husband asked for me to help get certain things done because these days I seem to get behind a lot which he just asked me to do my best because he knows the house will be cleaner and everything back to normal after the baby comes. Just I have no energy, I get tired so easy. A lady asked me yesterday because I am so big , are you sure your not having twins. Which I laughed and said I didn’t think so. To be honest, Allah willing I would love to have twins, a boy and a girl.
I would love to know how you are, I have missed you very much?
