Secretary of US army resigns

The Washington Post found wounded soldiers lying neglected in the Walter Reed army hospital [AP]

March 2, 2007

The secretary of the US army has resigned following media reports that troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan were receiving substandard medical treatment at the Army's top hospital.

Francis Harvey, resigned on Friday a day after he fired the general in charge of the Walter Reed hospital in Washington DC.

"I am disappointed that some in the Army have not adequately appreciated the seriousness of the situation pertaining to outpatient care at Walter Reed," Robert Gates, the US secretary of defence said after Harvey's resignation.

"Some have shown too much defensiveness and have not shown enough focus on digging into and addressing the problems.

"Also I am concerned that some do not properly ... understand the need to communicate to the wounded and their families that we have no higher priority than their care."

Gates said a new permanent head of the medical center would be announced later on Friday.

An investigation by The Washington Post found that soldiers convalescing from war wounds at Walter Reed were subjected to a morass of bureaucratic red tape and housed in a decrepit building.

I am glad that they are finally doing something about Walter Reed Hospital. The trouble is VA hospitals all over the country are not able to give Veterans the treatment they need. As a Vietnam vet I am really disappointed in the treatment most of us get. There are some who are doing a decent job but many more have not the money because of King George's along with past leaders who has cut the budget. I guess they would rather spend there money on a war that we should not even be in and forget about the ones they send to fight it. I have said it before and will say it again, I love America but hate the government for what it has done to destroy it. I don't know if Americans are just plain stupid or if they are just to afraid to stand up for what needs to be done.

Chet,

I wish to thank you very much for your comment, for the simple fact over the years I have had the opportunity to talk with other veterans from not only the Vietnam War, but also Korea and World War 2. One thing that I never fully understood is promises where made to those who served in the American Military they would always have good health care and sadly this is not so.

What is even worse they was promised free health care even to go as far as help those who are retired on a fixed income, with all of this I have to sadly say it has never been so. To the contrary a travesty with some who must seek private health insurance, to health care that is more inline to the impediment of a dungeon of horror’s that the health care is often times more like a fourth world country.

It has been a number of years now that I had the opportunity also, to visit a number of Veteran’s hospitals and for lack of a better word they frightened more for their lack of proper care, to even their lack of cleanliness.

What is even become worse or in equal alliance is the American health care system is becoming a shop of great horror’s, especially when those who can afford would rather go any other place in the world to seek health care that is more inline to compassion and actual attempt to make the patient well.
