61% of Israelis back release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Shalit

26 June 2007

Bethlehem - Ma'an - Israeli sources assured Israeli radio on Tuesday that Shalit's audio message, which was distributed on Monday by his captors, was true and that it was recorded recently.

The Israeli corporal, Gilad Shalit, was captured on 25 June 2006 by Palestinian armed factions, near the Gaza Strip. On the anniversary of his capture, yesterday, the Al-Qassam Brigades – one of the three factions responsible for the operation – issued an audio tape in which Shalit blames his government for not exerting enough efforts to ensure his release. He also complained that his health was deteriorating and he needed extensive hospitalization.

According to Israeli radio, Hamas' claims about Shalit's health conditions are seen as an encouraging gesture.

In a poll conducted by the Israeli daily newspaper of Yedioth Ahranoth, under the supervision of Mina Tseimah, a majority of respondents agreed that Israel should release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in return for Shalit's freedom.

61% of the 501 respondents agreed that Palestinian prisoners should be released, including those who were involved in killing Israelis. 35% of respondents rejected the suggestion.

Responding to the question, 'If Gilad was your son, would you change your opinion?," 80% replied 'Yes' and 16% said 'No'.

In addition, 87% of the participants believed that the Israeli government has not been exerting enough efforts to release Gilad Shalit.
