On Being a Global Refugee

21 June 2007

Thinking of the recent UNHCR report one of the things that was not mentioned and I am sure it would be hard to get an accurate number because this is a global situation, is the number of Palestinian refugee’s that live in every facet of the globe.

The Palestine Diaspora as it is being called now is the largest in history, it is estimated to be from last I heard ten time’s higher then the Diaspora of the Jewish population.

This is not an isolated estimate because of the recurring events of the war in Palestine this refugee situation is growing at an alarming rate.

For anyone that becomes a refugee in this kind of situation, the hardships are great from economic to social acceptance because of the fact I have found is due to the way these people ended up in these many foreign countries. For example, the Palestinians that are living in the United States, they struggle to make a life for themselves and their families that some are able to bring with them. While other’s, the men has had to come to find work and a life for wives and children living in other countries because them not a being citizen yet or only having a green card, it is very difficult and may even take years to unite the family.

Their was a time when living in this manner was termed “exile,” and there is not a better word to describe this life filled with hardships. You will find this from what I have found more in the children because they often are not readily accepted within the American society sphere, because of culture difference’s to genetic make up.

While there is many that hold tight to whom they are and make it through these hardships with a lot of sorrow and strength, in turn not giving up their religion or identity there is some I must admit that does succumb to the pressure of the society. They are forced to live with sometime dire consequences, such as the feelings of not belonging, feel lost to an outcast in that society.

One problem that seems to be newly rising from the perspective I seen now, is the newer refugee’s not always excepting those that may have had to live the hardship’s they are yet to face with acceptance.

In a situation such as this, the older refugee’s as well as those who are new should help each other in the vast but different experience to relieve some of these hardship’s with a unified understanding that this hopefully one day will not last. Along with the cause, that makes people refuges to the correction of this horrendous situation.

Furthermore, while those people that willingly immigrate to a country may become apart of the ideals of the new country, the refugee is forced to immigrate not by choice but by a forced situation and I am yet to understand why they must give up their identity in this type of situation.
