Gaza - Ma'an - The 25th of June 2007 will be the first anniversary of the abduction of the Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, who has been held captive in Gaza under the supervision of the Al Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas; the An Nasser Salah Addin Brigades, the armed wing of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC); and the Army of Islam.

A number of Palestinian armed men from the three brigades captured Shalit after violently storming the Karam Abu Salem/ Kerem Shalom crossing, between the southern Gaza Strip and Israel, on 25 June 2006. In their mission, two Israeli soldiers were killed and four were injured, and the Israeli corporal, Shalit, was kidnapped.

One year on, the kidnappers are assuring that they are preserving Shalit's life in order to exchange him with a number of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

The spokesman of the Al Aqsa Brigades, Abu Obeideh, told Ma'an that the Israeli army is still more powerful in this issue than Shalit's Palestinian captors.

He also added that the conditions that the Palestinian captors have placed on Shalit's release are humanitarian ones, and they are not going to change them or surrender them under any circumstances.

Recently, the issue of a prisoner exchange deal has been less discussed, especially in Gaza, where the future of Gaza and its inhabitants has greater importance and urgency.
