Refugee

Family at Ellis Island looking
at the Statue of Liberty in the Distance

by HRM Deborah

A middle aged woman
Set upon a railroad tie
Heart breaking
A single tear transfixed
To her cheek.

Having to flee as a refugee
To a foreign land
With long scarf and woolen coat
To save her from the unknown
Of a vast and challenging place.

The fear and loneliness
Of those who came before
In the days of Ellis Island.

Going with her husband
To a place not of their birth.

Beautiful Poem. Ellis Island has special meaning for me. I will tell you a story. My wife's great grandparents came from Belgium to the US and passed through Ellis Island. Their baby son Pete (my wife's Grandfather) was with them and unfortunately in this stage of life was very sickly. They were very worried their immigration would be rejected if they saw Pete's sickliness so his mother hid him in her bulky clothing. They prayed he would not cry and fortunately he did not. They passed through and he grew up healthy. Pete became a WWII war hero and a successful businessman. He also grandsired by lovely wife.

all_i_can_stands thank you very much for sharing this with me.

Most people come to America like your lovely wife’s family in search of a better life. I will admit some come here because their wasn’t any work in their home countries because of the global economic condition we are having at this time.

While their may be some that are trouble makers, I am thinking of the few that came to America many years ago from Cuba who came out of Castro’s jails.

But most are just good honest people. Like I know one very lovely man who came to America strictly because he did not wish his children to suffer for their was no work him in his home country.

Housewife, after days of seeing no new posts on your site, I came to the realization that my cache needed to be cleared. I thought maybe you were taking a break like you had mentioned. I cleared my cache and behold you have tons of additions. I have a lot of reading to catch up on.
