Defense lawyer seeks to have detainee trial moved from Guantanamo

June 15, 2006

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - A military defense lawyer for an alleged former bodyguard of Osama bin Laden wants the Pentagon to move the man's trial to the U.S. from the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

Army Major Tom Fleener says difficult access for witnesses and the media make it impossible to hold it fairly at the base in Cuba.

Fleener says a one-hour visit with his client requires a four-day trip because of access restrictions. He says the trial could be safely held at Navy bases in the U.S. where there are fewer restrictions.

The request came as the Pentagon expelled two reporters from Guantanamo as they tried to cover the investigation into the weekend suicides of three detainees at the prison.

I thought you might want to know that the media continues to use these fence pictures of Camp XRay with the prisoners in jump suits. This is a misrepresentation as Camp XRay has been closed since 2002 and there are new and very decent facilities at Gitmo. Here is a description from US Senator Bunning's website:

Our troops on the ground in Guantanamo are putting their lives on the line to protect and provide for terrorists. Yet some of my colleagues and other commentators suggest that these brave young men and women are the criminals. And when they make such outrageous statements, there are many in the media willing to repeat the accusations without bothering to check the facts for themselves.

For example, almost any pictures seen of detainees at Guantanamo are from Camp Xray. Everyone is familiar with those pictures. They are the ones with men in orange suits living in open-air cells made of chain-link fencing.

Well, Mr. President, I went to Camp Xray. Do you know what I saw? I saw weeds several feet high and plants growing all over the fencing. Do you know what I did not see? People. Camp Xray has been closed since 2002. It is no longer used - at all.

He then goes on to describe the new facilities. The link to this article on his website is:

The picture you are referring to is strictly a media file photo and in regards to the link you sent me, I could not find the information you was referring to on that web site, sorry.

I'll add an actual link which I am usually too lazy to do:

Link to Bunning Release

If that does not work do a Google search on

guantanamo bay "no longer used" bunning

It should be the first one.

AICS, thank you for your help and I did check out the information and please excuse me, but I would have to have more concrete proof then this to change my mind on what is happening to fellow Muslims.

As for the lazy comment, I am sorry but I did smile and snicker a little because I was taught that laziness is not a good thing.

As for the previous information though about American Military putting their lives online because of terrorist in Guantanamo Bay, it is proven that most of the men there has never been charged with any crime and are being held their against their will with the idea that not holding them directly on American soil circumvents the Geneva Convention; I think this is what the American’s had in mind when these concentration camps came into being.

As for anyone in the American military being isolated, they brought much of this on their selves by what I have seen in just the last 25 years for example especially with their foreign policies.

Too true. I have a pretty good memory, but I can never permanently remember the syntax for creating the html link. This is because I do not often add linksto comments. So the next time too much time passes to remember. So it is look up the syntax or do a "lazy" paste.

AICS, it is ok actually in a way you did me a favor because I do not laugh and smile lately as I think I should; because of being in ill health for about a month and half.

And the more I think about it, I am getting to sound like my Mother more all the time. :)

As for doing html in a comment box, you are one up on me because I have not learned yet and I do appreciate your effort.

And here goes my Mother again, if you put two seconds of effort the first time it saves you the headache of doing the job over again and you know it takes twice as long the second time. :)

Please take care and thank you!
