UK reminds Israel of UN call for complete withdrawal from West Bank

The British government has reminded the Zionist regime as well as the US that Israel must withdraw from all territories it seized in the 1967 war based on UN resolutions.
"The territory beyond the Green Line, which Israel occupied in June 1967, is occupied territory," Foreign Office Minister Lord Triesman said in a written parliamentary reply published Wednesday.
"UN Security Council Resolution 242 (1967), which the UK supported, calls for, `the withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict and the termination of all claims of belligerency,'" Triesman said.
He added that the resolution also urges "respect for and acknowledgement of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every state in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force." The minister was replying to a question from former BBC Director General Lord Dykes, who asked "whether the proposals advocated by the United States and Israel regarding the unilateral erection of a new border beyond the Green Line is in accordance with international law and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations since 1967." Rather than through attempts by the Zionist regime to impose a partial unilateral settlement, Triesman said that under Phase III of the roadmap "both parties will determine their permanent borders through mutual agreement." "Final status issues can be resolved only through negotiations and agreement between the parties themselves" under the roadmap's terms, he said.
The minister also said that the UK shares and will continue to work towards the Middle East Quartet's goals, including establishment of Palestine as a "viable, contiguous state." In a separate parliamentary reply, he also reminded the Zionist regime that the onus was on both parties, and not just the Hamas-led Palestinian government, to respect their existing agreements and act in accordance with international law.
"Israel must stop all settlement activity and route the barrier away from the Green Line," Triesman told peers in the House of Lords.
