Fatah, Hamas Create United Front?

Fatah, Hamas compromise on attacks

GAZA, June 24 (UPI) -- Fatah and Hamas agreed Saturday to launch violent attacks on Israelis only in territories they consider occupied.

Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah planned to meet later to discuss negotiations with Israel and other unresolved issues in the prisoners' document, Ha'aretz reported. The document, drawn up by members of both groups, includes a call for recognition of Israel within its 1967 borders.

Adnan Asfur, a spokesman for Hamas, said that both sides also compromised on the type of government, adopting wording that says they will "work for a unity government." Hamas had supported non-binding language, while Fatah supported the prisoners' document call for immediate formation of a unity government.

In recent weeks, Fatah and Hamas have come close to civil war, with members of both parties attacking public buildings held by the other side. After Hamas refused to accept the prisoners' document, Abbas called for a referendum on recognition of Israel.

Islamic Jihad said Friday that it would not accept the document.
