Israel frees Hamas minister

July 16, 2006

Ramallah - One of eight Hamas ministers detained by the Israeli army in a massive sweep in the West Bank last month was freed by a military tribunal on Sunday, the Israeli army said.

"Palestinian planning minister Samir Abu Eisheh has been released," an army spokesperson said, without giving further details.

Three other ministers were remanded for questioning for a further five to 10 days, while seven Hamas MPs and the mayors of the West Bank towns of Qalqilya and Jenin were to remain in detention for several days, he said.

Sixty-four members of the governing Palestinian faction Hamas - including a third of the cabinet and 26 MPs - were arrested in a massive Israeli operation in the occupied West Bank on June 29.

The army has refused to confirm details on the other Hamas ministers and lawmakers arrested in the sweep, but they were believed to remain in detention.

Israel launched a massive campaign against Hamas after a teenage soldier was abducted in a Palestinian commando attack on an army outpost on June 25.

The armed wing of Hamas was one of three militant groups that took part in the assault.
