Strong words from Jordan's king on Israeli attack

July 30, 2006

AMMAN, Jordan Jordan's King Abdullah calls today's Israeli strike on a Lebanese village an "ugly crime" and "criminal aggression." He says it violates international conventions and laws and he calls for an "immediate cease-fire."

Dozens of people were killed today in what has become the deadliest attack in 19 days of Israel-Hezbollah fighting.

The Israeli army says it targeted the village because militants had repeatedly launched rockets from the area on Israel.

The king, a strong U-S ally, quietly shares Washington's low opinion of Hezbollah (hez-BUH'-lah), which is backed by Syria and Iran.

His criticism underlines his frustration with the Lebanese-Israeli conflict. Moderate Arab governments fear it could swell anti-U-S sentiments and broaden popular support for Hezbollah, risking their own standing among their subjects.
