Israel the Great Butcher's

Massacre of Palestinians Continues

Hisham Abu Taha, Arab News

GAZA CITY, 5 November 2006 — Israel continued its murderous rampage in the Gaza Strip yesterday, killing nine Palestinians and demolishing houses.

The deaths brought to 43 the number of Palestinians killed since Wednesday in the Israeli offensive in the town of Beit Hanoun, on Gaza’s border with Israel. More than 200 people have been wounded in the sweep so far, including 29 who are in critical condition, Palestinian health officials said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas sought UN intervention to stop the massacre and Egypt denounced Israel’s “excessive use of force.” Rescue workers said Israeli troops killed seven Hamas activists in missile attacks and in clashes. Two other Palestinian, including a girl, were killed in Israeli shelling. Army bulldozers demolished five houses near a Beit Hanoun mosque that had been the scene of a standoff between troops and Palestinian fighters the day before.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan expressed deep concern at the escalation of violence and rising death toll and urged Israel “to exercise maximum restraint, do their utmost to protect civilians and to refrain from further escalating an already grave situation,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit expressed Egypt’s strong dismay at the Israeli operation, “condemning the use of excessive force and the lack of care for civilians,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In Gaza, the Popular Resistance Committees said the Israeli operation jeopardized prospects for the safe release of Gilad Shalit, a young Israeli soldier captured by Hamas-allied fighters in June.
