Britain's Police Chief at centre of 'cover-up'?
Mohamed Al Fayed attended the latest preliminary hearing at the High Court in London where further evidence emerged of a cover-up into the death of his son Dodi and the Princess of Wales.
In a sensational development it was revealed that Lord Stevens, the police commissioner in charge of the British investigation into the crash, is to be questioned over “gross discrepancies” in his report which alleged that Henri Paul was drunk.
The lawyer for Mr Paul’s parents, Richard Keen QC, said that in November 2006, Lord Stevens held a meeting with them and told them that their son was not drunk at the time of the crash – but just one month later published his report which concluded that Mr Paul was three times the legal French alcohol limit.
Details emerged after lawyers found a police note confirming the meeting and Lord Stevens’ assurance that the Pauls’ son was not drunk.
Mr Keen said that there were three explanations: that Lord Stevens lied to the Pauls, he was ignorant of his own report, or that he changed a key finding in it at the last minute.
Mr Al Fayed has long suspected a cover-up over the death of Diana and his son Dodi. He has campaigned for witnesses to be questioned before a jury of ordinary men and women. He was one of the first to brand the police report a whitewash when it was published.
The Coroner, Lord Justice Scott Baker said: “It’s always been in my mind that Lord Stevens is in the category of a possible witness.” He added: “We are not going to push this under the carpet.”
Mr Al Fayed also wants Lord Stevens to be questioned over the former police commissioner’s cover-up of a crucial note written by Diana, where she details her fears for her life.
Its content was made public by a national newspaper in 2003. It became clear that the police had been handed this note by the Princess’s late solicitor Lord Mischon, but had refused to pass it on to the French authorities.
The inquests are due to start in October 2007.
Mohamed Al Fayed personally welcomes all to his site.
